The HPTA’s 3rd Annual Hopkinton Heroes Essay Contest
Recognizing our local heroes -- It all starts here!
Students Isabelle O'Rourke, Callie Rose Ronan, Jane Stillwell, Elise Miller, Isabelle Simes, John Simes, Sasha Hagan, Andrew Hayes, Olivia Dumas, Charlie Dumas, Aden Arakelian, Adrina Arakelian, Alyssa Sousa and Jason Zaharis nominated their heroes, who included Mr. Sanford, Mrs. Puglisi, Liz Jurasek, Margie Wiggin, Amy Hansen, Detective Timothy Brennan, Tom Dawson, Craig Hay, Olivia Dumas and Nancy Barton. In honor of our Hopkinton Heroes, the Marathon Restaurant (25 Hayward St.) will offer the "Winners Circle" promotion for anyone who dines there on April 15, donating 15% of the tab to Hopkinton Schools.
Do you know someone who always goes the extra mile to make a difference in the lives of others? Is there someone you know who lives or works in Hopkinton who has made big strides towards helping the community, someone whose winning attitude and perseverance has made them stand out in the pack? This is your chance to say thank you!
The HPTA is pleased to announce the 3rd annual Hopkinton Heroes Essay Contest. Students in grades K – 12 have the opportunity to recognize a local hero. Submit an essay stating what makes this person a Hopkinton Hero (no more than one page please). Please include your name, age, grade, address and email address (as well as the name, address and email address of the person you are nominating). Essays are due by no later than March 15. Please mail a copy of your essay to:

Essay Criteria:
- Students in grades K – 12 are eligible to enter. Student must submit an essay, no longer than one page, stating why their nominee is a Hopkinton Hero. What they have done to serve others, what makes them stand out in the pack, how they have gone the extra mile.
- Only one essay per student will be considered.
- Nominees must live or work in Hopkinton. Any age.
- Past nominees and winners might not be re-selected by committee, unless recognized for a different reason.
- All entries must be received by March 15 in order to be considered
- 10 – 12 winners selected (based on the number of entries)
Winners Reception
- A winners reception will be held at the Marathon Restaurant on Thursday, April 15
- HCAM will create a DVD of each winner reading his/her essay
- Each nominated Hero will receive a framed copy of essay

2nd Annual HPTA Hopkinton Heroes Essay Contest
The 2nd Annual Hopkinton Heroes Program provided an opportunity for Hopkinton students to recognize their local hero to say THANK YOU for
all you do to make a difference in my life or in the lives of others.
Heroes inspire other heroes and we thank this year’s winners for making such a difference in our children’s lives. We also thank the students who took the time to sit down and write a nominating essay to give credit and thanks to their heroes. This year we awarded 9 Hopkinton Heroes nominated by students. They are: Mr. Chris Nadeau nominated by John, William and Julia Nadeau, Mrs. Callaghan nominated by Jenna Bogan, Mrs. Grady nominated by Skylar Wright, Kim Bolick nominated by Abigail Carbonneau, Mr. Gunduz nominated by Alex Kirshy and also by Jillian Tomlinson, Mr. Bill Harrington nominated by Katherine Knox, Officer Phil Powers nominated by Lulu Murphy, and Sheila Kester nominated by Lindsay Kester.

homework and fits "lots of things in to a very, very bustling schedule"
- Abigail Carbonneau (5th) nominated neighbor Kim Bolick: "She taught
me to stay true to myself and to also play sports."
- Jenna Bogan (6th) nominated Mrs. Callaghan: "She supplies every
child a fair chance and attitude that 'I should be recognized'"
- Alex Kirshy (8th) nominated Mr. Gunduz: "He confronted teaching with
extreme energy and infectious positivity"
- Jillian Tomlinson (8th) nominated Mr. Gunduz: "Mr. Gunduz has
changed my lifestyle and everything he has taught me is what I live by."
- Skylar Wright (9th) nominated Mrs. Grady, "She inspired me to go out
into the real and follow my dreams and never let anyone stop me from
reaching them."
