DATES ARE NOT FINAL - LOOK FOR A LISTSERV IN AUGUST
Please note that the 2010-11 Source Book is still a work in progress. Feel free to use this calendar as a guideline, but dates should not be considered final until a listserv is sent from the school district in August announcing that the Source Book is complete.

Letter from the Superintendent

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Community Members,

Welcome to the 2009-10 school year! The school year promises to be both challenging and exciting. We look forward to working with you to provide your children with a quality education. To this end, we will do our best to communicate with you, to involve you in your children’s education, and to seek your input on important school issues.

To facilitate your involvement, the HPTA and the school district collaborate yearly on the Source Book. We hope that this tool simplifies your planning and fosters a partnership between school and home. Distributing the document electronically is one of the school district’s ‘green initiatives’ and part of our efforts to create cost efficiencies.

As I begin my tenth year in the school district, Hopkinton has increasingly become known as one of the better school districts in the state. Our students excel annually in competitions at the state and national levels. During the 2008-09 school year, Newsweek Magazine ranked Hopkinton High School as the 420th best High School in the nation, and Boston Magazine recognized the High School as the 24th smartest high school in the state. Most recently, Money Magazine ranked Hopkinton 19th among its best places to live in 2009. Contributing to this ranking was the quality of our schools.

The upcoming school year begins an exciting new chapter for the school district as we adopt a new Strategic Educational Plan for the school district. The plan targets continued improvements in our curriculum and instruction program, expanded opportunities outside of the school day for students, and the reconfiguration of the school district into longer grade spans. The plan also focuses on facility improvements, improved communications, and cost saving initiatives. The document will be posted on the school district’s website at www.hopkinton.k12.ma.us once it is approved by the School Committee in September.

For our efforts to be successful, we need your continued involvement and support. Hopefully, this information provides you with a brief snapshot of the year ahead and encourages your affiliation with the HPTA. This partnership is an investment in your children, and for a community there is no better investment. We look forward to working with all of you during the upcoming year.

Sincerely,

John E. Phelan, Jr., Ed.D
